What are Essential Oils?

What are Essential Oils?

Have you ever heard of essential oils? When one of my good friends started talking to me about essential oils and all of the amazing products that she was making for herself and her family with them, I really had no idea what she was talking about.  So,  I thought maybe there might be other’s out there who were like me (initially) wondering what in the heck an essential oil is, and why are people so worried about the purity and quality of an essential oil?!

I was really interested in making some of my own all natural products and saving some money at the same time, so I started doing research.

So what are essential oils?

Essential Oils are a liquid that is derived from plants- more specifically from the leaves, bark, stems, flowers or roots of a plant. The oils come from specialized cells within the plant, and its chemical constituents determine the purity and therapeutic value of the oil.  They are most often steam distilled, because they can remove the oils from the plants at a temperature less than the boiling point, and preserve the therapeutic benefits of the oil.  Still with me? Is your next question about perfume??

Essential Oils are NOT perfume, or fragrance oils.

Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils are so drastically different than perfume. The perfume industry purchases oils for their aromatic qualities only and often use chemicals and extremely high heat to extract the oils stripping them of their therapeutic values.  So while the oils used in perfume may smell great, your body won’t receive any of the amazing benefits from the plant like God and nature intended.

Why would you use Essential Oils?

Essential Oils are powerful antioxidants! They are so powerful that they can affect every cell in your body within 20 minutes but instead of leaving a bunch of extra junk and toxins in your body, they are metabolized out just like any other nutrient!  Many essential oils are anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, antiviral, anti-microbial, and anti-parasitic. WOW! Why wouldn’t you want to use something that naturally had all of those properties? It gets better though, because many of these oils provide immune system support at the same time that they are destroying harmful bacteria and viruses!

How do you use Essential Oils?

There are three ways to use essential oils. You can use them topically, aromatically and internally (Warning! Not all essential oils are safe to ingest. Read labels carefully).

Oils can be applied topically, although some hot oils (Cassia, Cinnamon, Oregano, Thyme, Clove, Black Pepper, and the Protective Blend) must be diluted with a carrier oil before you apply on your body! I dilute all oils to help prevent any skin irritation. I personally prefer application to pulse points, back of the neck and down the spine.  The feet have large pores and are one of the fastest places on your body for the oils to enter your bloodstream. You can also use direct application, where you apply the oils to your area of concern, for instance, if I have an upset tummy I would apply a digestive blend directly over my abdomen.

To apply essential oils aromatically, you can directly inhale the oil from the bottle, or by putting a drop or two in your hands, rubbing them together and then cupping your nose while you inhale deeply. You can also use a diffuser to put a fine mist of the oil into the air. You can also receive benefits from something as simple as dropping oil on a cotton ball and putting it in your pillow.

Lastly, you can take some Essential Oils internally. Please be careful and only take certified pure oils internally that say they can be ingested on the label. Some oils on the market may be diluted with unknown ingredients or processed with harmful chemicals. To take oils internally you can: place one or two drops under your tongue, add to a beverage of your choice, and add to your favorite meals (be careful- they are super concentrated) or take in a capsule form.
